The animal is free to move within the behaviour arena (here 45x35cm for the mouse) on the base plate, resting on ultra-sensitive pressure sensors.
Synchronous video recording for the identification of behavioural correlates.
Minute pressure changes on the floor generated by each movement are detected with exquisite sensitivity using highly sensitive piezoelectric pressure sensors.

Components
The complete system for behavioural phenotyping is composed of :
- A behavioural arena (e.g. tansparent plexiglass), 35x45cm, 45cm height with a lateral aperture for animal insertion / removal
- 4 pressure sensors
- A baseplate lying on the pressure sensors
- An anti-vibration table
- An amplifier + analog/digital converter to digitize the pressure signals
- A video camera (top and/or lateral position) for continuous animal visualisation
- An acquisition computer to simultaneously record pressure-sensor and video signals
- Analysis tools for offline visualization of synchronised video and pressure signals, automatic animal position tracking (XY coordinates, running speed), manual and automatic detection and quantification (signal analysis, time-frequency decomposition) of specific behavioural components (e.g. shaking/shivering, time dynamics of momentum within individual footsteps during locomotion, of individual grooming movements, etc…).

Heart Beat & Breathing
Signal validation in the anesthetized animal
Validation of heartbeat signal detection using independent electrocardiographic recording (ECG) in the anesthetized animal (rat / mouse).

Locomotion
During locomotion, pressure signals reveal the time dynamics of momentum during each individual footstep.
Price
The Phenotypix is a very modular system, allowing extreme flexibility in design (arena shapes and sizes, number of sensors, accessories such as drinking bottle, food dispenser, operant conditioning modules, etc…). Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your needs or request a quotation.
An exemple pricing for a basic system is 19 000€, including :
- A behavioural arena of transparent plexiglass, 45cm high, lateral door for easy animal insertion and removal

Basic analysis scripts are available as freeware.
